POP QUIZ: WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO NAME SOMEONE TO SPEAK FOR YOU IN CASE OF SERIOUS ILLNESS?
- A) WHEN YOU’RE IN GOOD HEALTH
- B) WHEN YOU’RE IN A COMA
The answer of course, is “A”. The problem? – We are reluctant to talk about our medical wishes in case of serious injury or illness or end of life. Too often the result is family conflict and confusion at a time when you are most vulnerable… and cannot speak for yourself!
Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, along with other national, state and community organizations, are leading a massive effort to highlight the importance of advance healthcare decision-making — an effort that has culminated in the formal designation of April 16th as National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD). As a participating organization, Hospice is providing information and tools for the public to talk about their wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers, and to execute written advance directives (healthcare power of attorney and living will) in accordance with New York state laws. These resources are available at www.hospiceslv.org (click on the resources tab).
Individuals may call (315) 265-3015 or stop into the Hospice Office, located at 6805 US Hwy 11 in Potsdam to speak to someone about advanced care planning or to pick up an Advanced Directives packet.
For your peace of mind, and your family’s, think about what is important to you and share your wishes with your loved ones and physicians.
For more information about National Healthcare Decision Day, please visit www.nhdd.org.
If you are interested in scheduling a Dying to Talk educational presentation, contact Hospice Marketing & Events Coordinator Samantha Jones at firstname.lastname@example.org or (315) 265-3105.
Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley invites community members to join them for their quarterly book discussion group. The next group will be held in April 2018. Please check back for a date and the book to be discussed!
