National Healthcare Decisions Day – Have you made your wishes known?

POP QUIZ: WHEN IS THE RIGHT TIME TO NAME SOMEONE TO SPEAK FOR YOU IN CASE OF SERIOUS ILLNESS?

  • A) WHEN YOU’RE IN A COMA
  • B) WHEN YOU’RE IN GOOD HEALTH

The answer of course, is “A”.  The problem? – We are reluctant to talk about our medical wishes in case of serious injury or illness or end of life.  Too often the result is family conflict and confusion at a time when you are most vulnerable… and cannot speak for yourself!

Hospice and Palliative Care of St. Lawrence Valley, along with other national, state and community organizations, are leading a massive effort to highlight the importance of advance healthcare decision-making — an effort that has culminated in the formal designation of April 16th as National Healthcare Decisions Day (NHDD).

As a participating organization, Hospice is providing FREE information and tools for the public to talk about their wishes with family, friends and healthcare providers, and to execute written advance directives (healthcare power of attorney and living will) in accordance with New York* state laws.  Visit www.hospiceslv.org/nhdd to learn more. (These resources can also be downloaded here)

Individuals may call (315) 265-3015 or email samj@hospiceslv.org  for more information about advanced care planning and request Advance Care Planning Materials.

For your peace of mind, and your family’s, think about what is important to you and share your wishes with your loved ones and physicians.
